Our Story - Elijah's Xtreme

Elijah’s Xtreme® was created from a father and son’s love of hot peppers and passion to create a more flavorful, thicker, hotter, hot sauce. Elijah’s Xtreme Ghost Pepper Sauce officially launched in June of 2014! In August they landed their first account – Bass Pro Shops nationwide. Elijah’s Xtreme has been a top seller at Bass Pro ever since!

In 2003, Elijah at the age of 6, in his fathers garden, asked what he could do to be the youngest person to eat the world's hottest pepper. At that his father Bret, gave him a hot banana pepper and said "Start here.". That first bite sent Elijah running for water and began his love for hot peppers and hot sauces.

A few years later, after trying many different hot sauces, Elijah went to his father again and asked if they could make their own better tasting, hotter, hot sauce. It took the father and son team more than three years of trial and error to finally get their handcrafted recipe just right. Late in the summer of 2013 the two created the perfect balance of heat and flavor. They sent out over 100 samples and the feedback was great… everyone loved it, saying the same thing… “It’s hot, but has great flavor! ” With that, his father named their creation, Elijah’s Xtreme! (Since Elijah wanted to be so Xtreme by eating the world’s hottest pepper).

It was that same summer when Elijah, then 16, met Smokin’ Ed Currie at PuckerButt Pepper Company in Fort Mill, SC. Elijah ate “Smokin’ Ed’s Carolina Reaper®” the World’s Hottest Pepper and met his goal! (after that he later said, never again, that hurt for 24 hours!)

7 years later we are very blessed to be pushing the boundaries in the hot sauce world. Elijah graduated business school in 2020 and has since taken over part of running the business alongside his father.

As a young boy of Greek heritage, often my job at family events was manually cranking the rotisserie’s spit over an open fire. A bit older, I was fortunate enough to travel the globe for work and pleasure. I visited every continent except Antarctica by age 29, and was always sampling flavors and learning new cooking methods—it is safe to say I ate my way around the world! Both experiences instilled in me the belief that food tastes better when it is made simply, is full of flavor, and shared with family and friends.

Years later this still holds true.

Nothing makes me happier than cooking delicious meals with my two young boys. When I won a local BBQ charity competition, demand for my BBQ sauce grew thanks to its high-quality ingredients and unique flavor. We described it as “tangy and sweet with a bit of heat.” There were my boys helping me fill orders, mixing and measuring. Together we tried and tested the perfect bottle to create a fine application with minimal waste, the precision squeeze. Soon we started tasting the sauce on different things, from scrambled eggs to cheese quesadillas. We discovered it didn’t just work great for BBQ, slathered on smoked ribs, brisket, pork or chicken, but for enhancing the flavor of literally everything. Hence, Saucy Rascals Everyday BBQ Sauce was born.

After the success of OG BBQ Sauce, we decided to venture into new directions, including:

  • Spicy BBQ - taking our Original BBQ and adding a touch of Carolina Reaper
  • Mayo-BBQ - combining creamy homemade mayo with our Spicy BBQ sauce
  • Ketchup - we made it as a base for our BBQ Sauce, so why not bottle it!
  • Hot Sauce - fruity, citrus notes with a touch of sweet and balanced heat
  • Black Garlic Teriyaki - an oooh-mami bomb in your mouth, great for marinades

Meet The Rascals

Sebastien is the “S” in the Saucy Rascals brand and the face on the left of the logo! Sebastien is 10 years old, has a very sophisticated (yet picky) palette and at times thinks he is a professional food critic! He’s my #1 fan of Saucy Rascals BBQ ribs and is not afraid of a bit of spicy heat…he’s had several samples of some hot Carolina Reaper sauce in the past! He’s a huge help in product development and branding.

Rafael is the “R” in the Saucy Rascals brand and the face on the right of the logo! Rafael is 12 years old and is not afraid to try any food out there. He’s not as picky of an eater, but is not as keen on spicy food as his little brother! His favorite food is mac and cheese, and he’s always eager to get up early and smoke meat with me on BBQ days. Rafael is involved in product development, sales and social media content creation.

Mis’ Rubin’s always had a special meaning for me. I grew up working in the Penny Profit butcher shop during the summers and was hooked on the seasonings from an early age. The atmosphere of a family business was really appealing. After working in another industry and geography for a while, I offered to fill orders for my grandmother as she was looking to slow down. We forwarded the business number to my cell phone and it started ringing off the hook! The customers on the other end of the phone were from all walks of life and spread all over the country. They were all thrilled to find out that their beloved spices were available through retail outlets and online! And they all had a story about how and when they found our seasonings. Mis’ Rubin’s was so much more than just another brand. Each customer had such conviction and enthusiasm about our spices. We believe there’s value in sitting down to a great meal with friends and family. We're grateful to be a part of that for many and are honored to continue the Mis’ Rubin’s tradition.

Our History

Our founder, Rubin Hanan lived out the true American Dream. He emigrated to the United States from the isle of Rhodes in the early 1920’s. He came through Ellis Island and wasted no time setting up his life in the states. He moved to Montgomery, AL where he had a family contact and soon met and married his wife and partner in business, Julia.

Together, they continued Rubin’s family craft by opening a meat market called Penny Profit near downtown Montgomery. Julia was called “Mis’ Rubin” as was custom at the time and she created many spice blends that gave them an advantage over the larger stores in the area.

Penny Profit became a famous stop in the region because of the popularity of the “Mis’ Rubin’s Seasonings”. Black, White, Creole, & Fish Magic seasonings have been on the market since 1935 and have been enjoyed by generations of loyal customers ever since.
