Beginning our production journey in a 100 square foot space in the back of a meat market in our hometown, our all-natural, gluten-free products were embraced locally and quickly expanded regionally. Fueling this fiery success, we built and unveiled our state-of-the-art 20,000 square foot production facility in Hudson, WI in 2023 (that's right, we make every bottle of Croix Valley product ourselves, in our own facility, with our own team, and have done so since we started 15 years ago). After spending 10 years in the legal field, Lu put her efforts behind Croix Valley Foods to manufacture and market the award-winning product line full time.  Together with Damon, Lu formed the Croix Valley Sauces Competition Cooking Team, where her mastery of the art of barbecue thrust her into the arena of competition cooking.

As an avid food sport competitor, Lu has won numerous awards nation-wide in professional cooking competitions, including Kansas City Barbeque Society competitions, Steak Cookoff Association contests, Culinary Fight Club events and the World Food Championships. Food has an uncanny ability to connect people, evoke memories, and create lasting bonds. In my family, there’s one recipe that stands out as the epitome of togetherness and joy: My Dad’s recipe for BBQ sauce. Over the past 50 years, this mouthwatering dish has not only tantalized our taste buds but has also brought our family closer together. Let me tell you how it all started.

When I was a very small girl, my Dad began to make his own barbecue sauce (now known as Sticky Sweet) because he really disliked what he found at the store; a sauce was full of liquid smoke. What he made was simple barbecue sauce and it was delicious!

I grew up not knowing it was different. The love for that sticky gooey sauce for ribs and chicken grew as we shared our love for cooking with friends and beyond. I took the sauce in jars from home to college and cooked for my roommates. They were hooked.

One day my parents announced they were moving. I panicked, yes I would miss them, but what about the sauce? I had to get the recipe. His response was, “What recipe?” So we began a funny journey to get him to use actual measuring cups and I created a recipe.

Then my friends threw down a challenge and said the words I will never forget, “Jen don’t get old and wonder what if you ever did something with that recipe for barbecue sauce”.

I started the company a month later with one recipe and added a spicer version (Sweet & Spicy) and went to market. I knew a retailer, Ron, that might give me a solid opinion about the product. So I took samples to him. A few weeks later (the middle of December), I received a voicemail from Ron. He said, “I never call prospective vendors in the middle of December, but we all loved your product, can you have it ready for an event in our store January 20th?” I said yes and then figured out a way to make it. A few years ago, I jokingly told him it was all his fault I started down this road.

One thing that has always been important to me is that the product itself is not bad for you. So I started out using real food and as a company, we still use real food. Our products have always been Vegan, back before anyone but vegans knew what that was. We changed to a gluten-free recipe about 15 years ago and now test and certify our products as gluten-free. We’ve always known that it’s very important to us to use fresh, real, clean ingredients. We all deserve to eat proper food.

With all these delicious ingredients we bring amazing flavors to all our sauces, spice rubs, and dip & spread mixes.

Why is it important to eat real food?

Yes, it is very important we keep it simple, with no additives and nothing but recognizable ingredients. Why is that a big deal to have real food in our sauces and spices?  Because we care about what we feed our bodies.

Well, do you know what silicone dioxide is? It’s sand. Do you want an anti-caking ingredient like that in your food? Didn’t you eat enough dirt and sand as a toddler?

How about Xanthan Gum, do you know what it is? It’s derived from the mold that grows on corn. When the sugar from corn starts to ferment, you get a gooey substance that some manufacturers add to food. Yummy. Seriously companies use it to stretch ingredients to make products cheaply. They do this instead of using real food.

How we started

A homemade Christmas gift in 2009 sparked the start of The Spice Lab. Technology entrepreneur Brett Cramer wanted to share his newfound fascination with gourmet sea salts with his family and friends. Enjoying woodworking as well as being an avid gourmet cook, he handcrafted a wooden base out of scrap lumber to hold test tubes filled with exotic sea salts from around the world. His wife Jennifer, an interior designer, wanted to start a company and thought that Brett’s creation would be an ideal way to enter the gourmet gift business.

Production

Products are packed in our 125,000 square foot SQF certified facility in Pompano Beach, Florida that includes a design department, research and development kitchen with full-time chef, business offices and product showroom. With twelve production lines, the company can produce 150,000 units per day.

The heart of Terrapin Ridge Farms comes from my love of entertaining. I grew up in a family that loved to host parties – our annual Holiday Open House was legendary. My friends loved to hang out at our house and everybody was extra excited when it was Aunt Rosie’s (my mom’s) turn to host the holiday party. She made it look so easy. Her secret was a laid back style and effortless, great-tasting food. The spread looked and tasted like she fussed for days.

I discovered early on I inherited this love of entertaining and ultimately this love is what has drawn me into the world of specialty food. After 10 years in the specialty food industry, I ventured out to buy a small specialty food brand with budding potential. I reached out to a friend of 22 years, and fellow Cleveland native, Brian Coughlin, in July of 2010 and together we purchased the Terrapin Ridge Farms brand. Our brand has grown from a handful of items to over 84 great selling products including savory jams, garnishing aioli squeezes, mustards, dips, dressings, sauces, and now grill and wing sauces. We have developed a reputation as a truly original, high quality food creator. Our team is made up of passionate foodies with the goal to deliver on creating a memorable and positive experience that can be shared with loved ones, turning simple into unforgettable.
