About the Vendor: Torchbearer Sauces
Torchbearer Sauces was founded by Vid, Ben, and Tim, three guys in their 20s with a knack for creating tasty condiments, fiery hot sauces, and tasty recipes with them. Besides creating a range of table sauces and enough recipes to fill a book, Torchbearer has also been turning heads with the world’s first habanero cheesecake.
So how did Torchbearer start, you ask? Well, like many great inventions, the sauce itself started as a fluke. Vid and Ben just happened to have lots of extra habaneros in their gardens that they didn’t want to go to waste. As a result, they decided to create a habanero preserve. Little did they know that it ended up tasting better than anything on the market —so, naturally, they decided to share a good thing.
The three guys took a few days off work, drove from Pennsylvania to Texas—and back (over 72 hours!)—and picked up 666 pounds of habanero peppers. They spent two weeks of chopping, bagging, and freezing the peppers so they’d have enough for the upcoming winter. It wasn’t long before they were making all the sauces themselves, by hand.
Armed with temporary labels and their first full batch of sauce, it was now time to see if the world was ready. The guys went down to the Cajun Hot Sauce Festival in Louisiana and won three national awards with their sauces. More awards started coming and it wasn’t long before the word started getting out. Miners Mix is a family-owned and operated business, run by Dave and Josh, based in Mariposa -- home of California’s Yosemite National Park. In January, 1848 gold was discovered close by, which led to the 1849 gold rush.
Miners Mix embodies the art of gourmet cooking and flavors that could have been crafted back in the days of the gold miners who used to walk the hills and valleys of this Mother Lode region. There’s no MSG, no flavor enhancers, no preservatives, no artificial colors, and no high-fructose nonsense in any of our products. When you taste Miners Mix on a steak, piece of chicken, or some grilled mushrooms, you really do taste the food, just as those tough ol’ gold miners did so many years ago. Miners Mix blends are a natural evolution of over 50 years of tending grills and smokers in searing desert heat as well as in snow and sleet. Great food is a balance of salt, spices and the natural flavors of what you’re eating. Seasonings are supposed to complement the flavor of the food; they should not cover up the natural flavor, nor become the primary flavor of what’s on the plate. After all, one eats foods for the flavor of the meats and vegetables - not the seasoning. We think that’s the way seasonings should be used and trust that you’ll agree.
The genesis of Miners Mix occurred back in 2003 during a year-long sabbatical in Australia with our two young children (Josh and Shelby). Our family drove coast to coast all over that wonderful nation, and we even made it to the island of Tasmania. Being native southern Californians, my wife and I are both addicted to Mexican food, a cuisine sadly represented in Australia where “tortilas” were kept in the grocery frozen foods section, and the first, most abundant ingredient listed on the single salsa brand label happened to be sugar. Surprisingly, masa was available in a local gourmet shop and so out of desperation, I taught myself to make corn tortillas by hand, learned to make refried beans from scratch and began tinkering with spices to make Mexican chorizo.
Upon return to California, and the plethora of chili varieties unavailable “Down Under”, I continued to tinker with my chorizo and other seasoning blends. Friends pushed and demanded that we start selling the seasonings and rub blends that I'd developed over the years. Despite misgivings and great reluctance to jump into a crowded fray, I decided to take the plunge and so in September of 2009, Miners Mix set up shop with a pop-up and folding table at the local Blazin' Hog BBQ competition. We've never looked back!
