Grilling Classic: BBQ Chicken with Homemade Sauce

BBQ Sauce Grilling Classics Barbecue chicken with homemade sauce during the summer time? Perfect recipe!  Try this recipe and make something everyone will love. Use any meaty part of the chicken you want. Legs, thighs, breasts, etc.


Ingredients: Dry rub:
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 tablespoons paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon celery seed
  • 3/4 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 3 to 4 pounds chicken
  • 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons of salt
Homemade sauce (makes about 1 1/2 cups):
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoons molasses or honey
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon light brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/4 teaspoon hot sauce
Directions: *note: Make the sauce in advance
  1. Fill large container with enough water to cover the chicken completely.
  2. Mix the salt into the water until dissolved, then whisk the vinegar into the water.
  3. Add the chicken to the container, cover, and refrigerate for several hours or overnight if you want.
  4. How to make the sauce: Whisk all the ingredients together in a saucepan over medium heat.
  5. Bring it to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer the mixture for about 10 minutes. Stir.
  6. Take it off the heat and let it cool completely. Once cool, pour into a jar or other container and let it sit in the refrigerator uncovered for about 8 hours so the flavors can blend well.
  7. Take the chicken out of the brine and drain. Remove the brine. Pat the chicken dry.
  8. Lay the chicken out on a baking sheet or flat surface that will fit into the fridge.
  9. Mix all the dry rub ingredients together and rub evenly on the chicken. Let the chicken refrigerate for another several hours.
  10. When ready to eat, grill chicken. Use a food thermometer to make sure that the chicken is 165 degrees F on the inside, checking the thickest part of the chicken. * Note: Different parts of the chicken require different cooking times.
  11. Pour on more BBQ sauce for the last 5-10 minutes of cooking, Save some sauce for use once you serve.
  12. Serve and enjoy!
